Glass Shower Doors: How to Prevent Spots

February 3, 2023

Thinking of renovating your bathroom? That’s a great idea!

Shower glass partitions add modern elegance to any bathroom. However, just like other fixtures exposed to moisture, they can have unsightly hard water stains, which makes some homeowners think twice before installing glass in their bathrooms.

Water spots on the bathroom glass door result from soap scum and hard water. Hard water has a high concentration of minerals like magnesium and calcium. Over time, these minerals build up on surfaces, such as in shower glass doors, and leave limescale spots.

However, this problem should not discourage you from using glass in your shower doors. We want to give you some tips on removing hard water spots from glass, which will give your shower partitions and the door a sparkling shine when you follow.

1. After your shower, wipe down the glass to prevent water from drying on the glass surface. Use a squeegee to do it. The squeegee will help prevent soap scum and hard water deposits from drying and accumulating on glass surfaces. Starting from the top corner, lightly drag the head down the glass as you make a pull. Repeat the process until there is no water left on the glass.

2. Leave the shower door open so the air will keep circulating. This will help in drying further the door and the shower glass partitions.

3. Try using simple cleaning solutions to remove hard water stains from glass. Avoid abrasive, acid-based cleaning chemicals, as they contain unpleasant and unhealthy fumes that are not good for you. They can also damage your hardware and the enclosure with regular use. Here are some natural cleaners that you can make out of materials that are readily available at home:

  • lemon juice
  • vinegar and water
  • water, tee tree oil, and alcohol
  • baking soda and white vinegar

4. Do more quick cleanings frequently. This will make your shower glass door look its best. Regular cleaning will help stop the growth of mildew and mol. Everyday cleaning would be great, but doing it every few days would be desirable to remove hard water spots and residue.

5. Use a handheld steam cleaner for extreme, careful, and complete cleaning. It is an effortless way of removing dirt and grime buildup and wouldn’t harm your glass shower.

6. Apply a protective coating to your bathroom glass doors. If you can’t do regular squeegeeing, a protective coating, such as Rain-X, will prevent the buildup of hard water spots. A coating of Rain-X will protect your bathroom door for up to 6 months.

7. If you are not a DIY person, some companies offer their services in applying protective polymer glass coating that is guaranteed to last for many years. Some will also do the cleaning themselves before the application of coating.

This is one cautionary piece of advice for you. Only apply the product to your shower glass partitions or door after discussing it with your contractor. Why? Because most of these contractors add special coating or finishes to the glass, and this could cause damage to the shower door – or get the warranty voided – if you clean or treat the surface using products that the contractor does not approve.
